Help Desk is transforming – if the last two weeks have been any indicator I believe that we are all busy trying to complete longer more involved projects that help a wider variety of people. Some miscellaneous projects that have been completed: fixed a projector that was ready to be trashed, fixed a tested a smartboard that we found, and hooked up all of the Macs (Power Mac G5’s – we have six) to BOINC.
In other news, the article that I co-authored with Mr. Tobin on increasing trust in not only Northgate but the district as well has been viewed over 200 times – you can take a peek here.
Zoho Support – our program of choice for managing internal and external tickets (tasks to be completed) is working wonderfully. However, on November 9th and 10th their servers were hit with a DDoS attack (which you can read about here) and that put us out of commission as we had all of our ideas saved in the Cloud. This left me wondering if I can create a secondary plan or integration to make sure that all of our information is accessible even if Zoho is taken out of commission for an extended period of time. My first thought was to look into Moxtra integration and see if I am able to port our data to a shared binder; by my next weekly update I will know definitively. (Update 11/19: This integration is possible and I am testing it right now.)
I am working with Ms. Moore to set up (and hopefully utilize) a 3D Scanner from NextEngine that has been packed away for quite some time. We hope to add this to the Makerspace at Northgate so that it can be used by the Engineering and Art Departments. In other news, two of our small 3D printers are out of commission and I am currently working as quickly as possible to repair them. The main issue is while they are calibrated, when the platform rises to the maximum height to begin printing, the tray tilts rather than remaining level. This causes the hot plastic to accumulate on the extruder, rather than be laid down layer by layer on the print surface.
Finally we began to discuss the presentation of our ILE’s. My ILE (singular) has become something of a duality as I split my time editing the school website and building the “supercomputer”. Take a look at my Google Presentation here!
That’s all for now! Quote of the week: “Students are encouraged to connect with others, and to collaborate and create with them on a global scale. It’s not ‘do your own work,’ so much as ‘do work with others, and make it work that matters’. – Will Richardson, Why School?
